Lonely and lost
The last stanza in the poem laundrette is a negative stanza. You can tell this because of the words like: dour, half lost, small, cast off and flotsam. These are all words that set a negative mood to this stanza. " This dour man does for himself ." This sentence is says that the man is only washing his clothes. The word dour means that the person always looks upset even if they aren't. In this sentence it's uses dour to describe the man although he probably is sad and lonely. " half lost, his small possessions swim. " this doesn't mean his clothes are small it means more that he doesn't have a lot of clothes therefor they are floating in the water from the washing machine. This stanza is a negative and sad ztanza about a lonely man washing his few clothes.
